Amex Forex Card India - We look at other pros and cons of ...

Does forex conversion rate vary for brand of card within the same bank?

Is it possible for BDO to charge foreign currency expenses differently based on the brand of card used? According to the general credit card table of fees & charges “assessment rate of 1% plus service fee of 1.5% of the converted amount based on the forex rate of visa/mastercard/etc and BDO at the time of posting”, while the amex table says “a conversion factor of 2.5% will be applied to the converted amount, of which 1% is retained by amex”. Are they different or are they essentially the same thing just worded differently? Thank you.

Best non-airmiles (cash back?) credit card in Singapore

I have always used an airmiles card for Singapore Airlines miles. I might not be flying in the near future so thought about applying for a second credit card, and I thought cashback is the best deal right now. Has anyone researched the best cashback credit cards?
I thought the only ones worth considering are:
- UOB One card - gives you fixed cashback of SGD300 if you spend at least SGD2,000/month for 3 consecutive months (or 5% cashback if you spend exactly SGD2,000/month as you get no cashback for the excess) and fixed cashback of SGD50 or SGD100 if you spend at least SGD500/month or SGD1,000/month, respectively for 3 consecutive months (or 3.3% cashback if you spend exactly the minimum) (but dealing with UOB is the most painful experience on the planet; this is a bank that will send you a SMS that they sent you a physical letter to ask you to send them an e-mail)
- American Express True Cashback - 3% on first SGD5,000 if you spend SGD5,000 within first 6 months; 1.5% otherwise with no minimum (great as a second card if you hit the cap of another card and regularly spend beyond the SGD2,800 spend limit for cashback of the UOB One; also gives you 2.5% cashback on non-SGD spend but you would save by using Transferwise or a similar challenger bank card to pay for lower forex rather than paying an inflated credit card forex rate and getting 1% back)
- HSBC Advance - SGD150 on first SGD800 if you spend SGD800 in first month; 1.5% up to SGD70/month otherwise (2.5% if you are HSBC Advance client); 2.5% for dining, utility and telco bills with SGD2,000/month minimum spend (could be useful as a second card like the Amex True Cashback)
- UOB YOLO - gives you 8% cashback (capped at SGD60/month or cash back on up to SGD750/month spend) on weekend dining, entertainment and Grab (3% on weekdays) with minimum SGD600/month spend (could be useful if you are ordering fancy weekend takeout a lot right now)
- OCBC 365 - gives you 6% cashback (capped at SGD80/month or cash back on up to SGD1,333/month spend) on dining and online food orders, and 3% cash back on grocery, telco and utilities, with minimum SGD800/month spend (could be useful if you are ordering a lot of takeout right now, but OCBC is also harder to deal with)
- DBS Live Fresh - gives 5% cashback capped at SGD60/month but requires minimum spend of SGD600/month; gives actual monthly cashback of up to SGD20 on SGD400 per category for "online", "eligible Visa Contactless", and all other spend (you get up to SGD40/month cashback on SGD800/month spent in two broad categories (online and Visa contactless) but a lot of hassle for up to 3 x SGD20/month and useful only if you spend so much (and still want to squeeze out this SGD60/month of cashback!) that you max the cap on the better cards; again, you might make a loss by forgetting about the card and having to pay late fees, annual renewal fee, etc)
- Maybank Friends and Family - 8% cashback (capped at SGD80/month or cash back on up to SGD1,000/month) on groceries (including online grocery), fastfood (including Deliveroo and Foodpanda), petrol, ride hailing, and telco, with minimum SGD800/month spend to receive 8% rate (useful if you spend closer to SGD1,000/month on groceries but that's not everyone)
Other options (that are nowhere as good as they first seem) would be:
- Citi SMRT - gives 3% cashback on "online" shopping and 5% on selected groceries, McDonalds and other fastfood, Starbucks and other coffee, movie; minimum spend of SGD300/month (plus 2% on ez-Link top up, if you want a couple of dollars more a month!) (looks like a huge hassle because you get "SMRT$" instead of real dollars up front; could be useful as a second card if you max out the caps of the better cards, carefully check if a merchant counts as "online", and if you buy your groceries at Fairprice, Giant or Sheng Shiong)
- Citi Cash Back - gives 8% cashback capped at SGD75/month for dining, grocery and petrol but requires minimum spend of SGD888/month; gives actual monthly cashback of up to SGD25 on SGD312.50 per category for dining, grocery and petrol (a lot of hassle for up to 3 x SGD25/month, you might make a loss by forgetting about the card and having to pay late fees, annual renewal fee, etc)
- POSB Everyday - could be useful if you shop at Sheng Siong and the other places covered by the card
- Bank of China family - gives you 10% cashback on dining of up to SGD25/month on SGD250/month and 3% on online shopping, with minimum SGD800/month spend (if you want to do the accounting acrobatics to keep track of the details...)
- QUESTION - Maybank Visa Infinite - featured in the Straits Times June 14, 2020 edition as being the only card that racks up rewards points for insurance premiums, but I cannot figure out the card based on the Maybank website. It emphasises air miles as its perks and says it has a SGD600 annual fee (waived for SGD60,000 annual spend).
Has anyone else applied for non-airmiles cards? Happy to hear people's thoughts.
UPDATE: I was wondering what the best spending plan is for someone who spends at least SGD2,000-3,000/month. Below that, you should focus on the minimum spend for one card and above that, you would put the excess in a card like the Amex, Standard Chartered or HSBC Advance with a no cap 1.5% cash back.
I was thinking:
DBS Live Fresh - Spend your first SGD800/month of online and Visa contactless on this card (two broad categories) for 5% cash back
UOB Yolo or OCBC 365 - Spend up to SGD 750 or SGD1,333/month on weekend dining or dining and other qualified spend here for 8% or 6% cash back
UOB One - Put your spend that does not go to a higher cash back card here and make sure you hit exactly SGD500, 1,000 or 2,000/month for SGD50, 100 or 300 cash back/quarter (again, you get no cash back for the excess)
American Express True Cash Back - Put your spend here after you hit the monthly target on the UOB One
UPDATE: I tried applying for the UOB One, took UOB two months to process my application, then they say after approval, they need two business days to process the release of the actual credit card then two business days to deliver. I tried HSBC, Amex and DBS and they processed and delivered the actual card on the third business day after application (not after approval but after submission of the application)

Best CAD CC for no FOREX fees & CB on high spend categories

For the longest time, I’ve had the PCF WE MC that isn’t really all that useful to me as most of my purchases are for dining out and groceries (getting back 1%) and I don’t shop at most of these loyalty stores anymore (Shoppers, Loblaws, No Frills, etc).
Anyone have recommendations as to the next best option for someone who already has a great AMEX Cobalt card (that’s barely accepted by any merchants) and would like a card to replace my PCF WE so I have a card that I can actually use when my AMEX isn’t accepted? FWIW, some merchants actually charge a fee to use AMEX... Looking for most, if not all, of the following features sorted by order of preference:
I feel like the Rogers WE, which has been SEVERELY devaluated, still satisfies what I’m looking for but would like to evaluate any other options.
🍻
P.S. Does anyone know if Visa or AMEX allows for gaming/casino purchases? I know MC works.

American Express: Is it accepted in Europe?

I will be travelling to Europe this Summer and this is major concern that I have.
I do own Visa and Mastercard however, I like using American Express because of Air Miles & other perks. Plus, American Express has travel insurance on the card so it makes me feel safer using it rather than Visa or Mastercard.
Is American Express commonly accepted in Europe? Will I have a problem using American Express in stores, bars, clubs, restaurants, etc.?
Any advice is appreciated.

Replace Capital One World Elite Mastercard

I didn't want to hijack this thread:
https://www.reddit.com/PersonalFinanceCanada/comments/hmew13/looking_for_new_credit_card/
So I started a new one, I hope that is okay. I am looking for slightly different advice. I've never considered myself as an elite/prestige customer, but maybe I have been selling myself short and using the wrong "class" of credit card. Looking to replace the Capital One World Elite Mastercard because of their reward reduction, but rather than a direct placement, should I be looking for something "better" for my personal situation:
Thanks in advance.

Trying to trim down my credit cards

Just (probably) graduated in April, and I'm trying to clean up my credit cards. Don't really like having a bunch of cards that I never use.
Currently, I have:
CIBC Visa SPC(?) from 2015 - 3500 CL, not a revolving account on creditkarma if that makes a difference
BMO SPC or whatever replaces it from May 2017 - 3000 CL
Rogers World Elite from January 2020 - 1000 CL
Amex Personal Platinum from May 2020
I don't really use the CIBC, BMO that much - especially the CIBC, and I got the Amex Platinum to replace Rogers World Elite. I have USD and USD credit cards so the forex rates don't matter a whole lot to me anymore, especially with the nerfs and spending minimums.
What should I get rid of?

Looking for advice on a secondary credit card

My partner and I share our Tangerine World for most spending, like groceries, dining, and bill payments. I had the Rogers World Elite for travel-related purchases and other personal purchases, like take-out and stuff from the odd online retailer (sometimes involving forex).
Now that the Rogers card is being devalued and will have a spending minimum (which I can't meet), I'm looking around to see if there's a better general cash-back card out there that I could get my hands on. I haven't really been seeing anything better though, besides AMEX cards that I'm weary to commit to.
Should I just stick with the Rogers card until they downgrade me?
Edit: Also should add that Credit Card Genius says I'd be getting back 3.88% on the Brim Mastercard based on my spending. That would be the highest according to the website, but not really sure how they came to that number...

Can't re-apply for Tangerine Credit Card

I was denied the Tangerine Credit Card 2 months ago; since then I improved my credit score and put money into the Tangerine Savings account (just in case they factor that into their decision).

I tried to re-apply for a credit card by clicking Apply Now on this page (www.tangerine.ca/en/products/spending/creditcard) but the Credit Card doesn't appear on the list of accounts I can open. Is there a re-application period that I need to wait out?

Update: Spoke to Tangerine Customer Service. Re-application period is 3 months; they suggest waiting 6 months.

Credit card questions

Have some questions, hope someone can help me through all of this.
Right now I have a basic no-fee TD Visa cash back card. I want to get a travel rewards credit card.
I've narrowed it down to the following cards:
TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite
RBC Avion Visa Infinite
CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite
American Express Cobalt
A big concern for me is having open and easy redemption as far as flight rewards go. I want any airline, no blackout periods, and no seat restrictions. That's why I want to avoid cards that use Aeroplan or other specific airlines.
I'm just confused when it comes to each bank's point system. They all have different ranges and values and it makes it hard to visualize which one has the best bang for your buck. Does anyone have any insight as to which one is preferable or offers the best basic benefits for travel?
For the RBC card, a big perk I like is saving 3 cents per litre on gas, and getting a little boost in points as well when you fill up at Petro.
My girlfriend uses the RBC Avion card and she seems to like it. If I were to get another bank's card and then we wanted to go on a trip together, wouldn't she want to use her card to book and I want to use my card to book? If we both were to use different travel portals to book a trip by redeeming points, how easy would it be for her to use RBC's redemption site and for me to use TD's (example) and pull up the same flight to book on? Are there big differences in what flights show up on different banks' travel portals?

Stubhub refund in different currency triggers forex fees. Is this legit?

I sold tickets on Stubhub for events in Canada. Stubhub paid me, sometimes in USD and sometimes in CAD, to my PayPal account.
These events were just officially cancelled and Stubhub sent an email saying they would charge me for the cancelled events. They immediately charged one of my credit cards on file, a USD Amex, in CAD for all of the events. The resulting credit card forex fees were $90.
Of course I agree I should re-pay Stubhub for the cancelled events. My issue is that 1) they arbitrarily used a different payment method than how the transaction was originally carried out (Paypal vs credit card) and 2) they sometimes charged the refund in a different currency than the original transaction.
I assume they've covered themselves with their TOS, and I'm out $90. It's just infuriating because I would have happily and immediately paid them in whatever currency they wanted if they had just asked before proceeding to charge my USD card. Is this type of thing allowed?
PS I should mention I'm not a professional scalper - I moved cities and needed to sell season tickets I had from before. After stubhub fees, I barely break even.

Best Credit Card for EU person travelling around the world?

What are best credit card in 2019 that would be useful for an EU citizen travelling about 1x a year and spending a few thousand monthly on advertising (iTunes ads, Google ads, etc...) + online shopping and regular shopping?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KT9ALlvND8U
This guy recommends several, but I'm not sure if they are applicable to EU people.

Rumour: 30,000 points WB offer for Scotia Gold Amex on August 1st

Rumour: 30,000 points WB offer for Scotia Gold Amex on August 1st
The new Scotia Gold American Express is coming in a few days, and the rumour is that there will be a new improved welcome bonus of 30,000 Scotia Reward points (worth $300).
It's also rumoured to have a totally new gold on black design, which if true would send this card from Ugliest Gold Card in Canada to one of the Top 5 imho.
TL;DR: You can apply now with the cheaper $99 AF, or gamble on a higher WB after August 1st when the AF goes to $120

Things are know are gonna happen ( https://www.scotiabank.com/newgold ):
  • AF rises to $120 AF :(
  • Groceries, Dining and Entertainment go from 4x to 5x :)
  • Gas goes from 4x to 3x :(
  • "Streaming services" is a new thing at 3x :)
  • Public transit is also a new thing at 3x :)
  • No forex fee! But you only get 1x on any foreign purchases
  • $50k cap on bonus categories stays the same
  • Killed off Price Protection, nerfed some insurances :(
  • Still redeems at $1 = 100 points on portal or Pay Your Own Way :)

What is the best credit card for Canadian Travel related perks?

Perks I would be referring to would be (but not limited to):
I have tried to do some research but everything seems skewed heavily to the US. As of right now it looks like it is between the Visa Infinite Privilege from TD at $399 annual fee and the Amex Platinum at $699 annual fee. Both pretty hefty fees.
I currently have TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite for my everyday card and a Roger World Elite Mastercard for Forex purchases/places that don't take Visa. I pay no fee's for either but given I travel for work/personal 10+ times a year I would like to look into trying to get some perks. I would probably rotate/churn whichever choice I make annually to benefit from sign-up bonuses

Just graduating university and starting work, need a new credit card(s).

Hey guys, I recently graduated university and will be starting work next week. It's time that I get serious about my personal finances... I currently have a CIBC Dividend card and CIBC Imperial Service? Debit card, these were picked by my parents and I think I should really take ownership of these kinds of things.
TL;DR of myself. My annual salary will be 95k. I like to travel but not too much, a few vacations (1 - 3 weeks) a year just to have a nice work life balance. I will be living in downtown Toronto, so I think I won't be owning a car in the near future. I like putting money into:
I currently spend about 1k a month, excluding rent. My spendings:
I've looked into 2 cards that might appeal to me, from some of the posts I've read: 1) AMEX Cobalt Card 2) Rogers Platinum MasterCard. The AMEX will be for food and transportation and Rogers one will be for when I travel.
I have 2 concerns:
  1. I've been reading some posts on /churningcanada/ and been wondering if the rewards are really worth it and simply cash back is better?
  2. I'm not sure if I need a Visa card or not? Will I have troubles with a Amex and Mastercard only.

Which of these am I most likely to get approved for?

Hey all, I'm an 18 year old who's pretty new to credit(3 months of history) but I've been doing lots of research and I've decided which cards I want to apply for in the future. I just wanted to know which I should apply for first (which one I'm most likely to be approved for). My income is $24,000 a year ($64,000 counting scholarships) and I don't have a FICO score yet. My current card is a Wells Fargo Cash Back College card.
The cards I want:
-AmEx Blue Business Plus
-AmEx Gold
-AmEx Platinum
-CapitalOne QuickSilver
I've looked at the calculators and I'll net more rewards off an AmEx trifecta than the Chase trifecta, and I want the QuickSilver for the fact that it has no annual fee and no ForEx fee, so I can use it internationally where AmEx isn't accepted (I travel frequently).
My apologies for bad formatting, on mobile

~$100k spend over 20 months upcoming. Best way to maximize points/cashback?

Actual spend will be in USD ~$65k. I’ll be paying everything off in CAD anyways, but some savings on exchange would be great also.

My credit card plan

Hello! So during school I was lazy for the most part regarding my banking, and now that I've graduated and I have a real job I want to sort out my financials and make sure I am getting the most out of my spending. Currently I have 2 credit cards, an RBC Signature Rewards and Scotia's Scene CC with credit limits close to $10K each. I am planning to cancel my RBC rewards because I'm in the process of switching out to TD and I'm not going to pay the $40 annual fee to keep the card, and as for my Scene it gets me good points but I don't got to Cineplex often and they keep jacking up the Scene redemption rates.
My monthly expenses are roughly as follows:
This is what I plan to hold (upon approval of course):
Simplii Cash Back Visa - Use exclusively for 4% on restaurants (I'll have to open an account with them tho, which is fine because I can churn and get $200 for opening one)
Tangerine MC - 2% back on the recurring payments + maybe gas? (IF I get approved that is)
Rogers WE MasterCard - $0 annual fee, 1.75% on everything, 2% on my Fido bill (in case I can't get Tangerine), 4% on Forex when I travel and online purchases + WE benefits. I don't make $80K but I feel like my combined household limit is $150K but I need to double check this.
And my fallback option if I can't get the Rogers WE is to go for the SimplyCash and get 1.25% on the rest of my purchases. I saw somewhere that the Amex Cobalt was good but I got confused on how the redemption works and I don't think be positive enough over the $120 annual fee for it to be worth it. Also I was exploring the TD and Scotiabank offers and they didn't seem to entice me as much as the Rogers WE, and I can get TD's annual fee's waved because I can put $5K liquid as my emergency funds in a No Limit account and avoid banking/CC fees. I could do the same for Scotia with their new account, but I am wary of them because I've heard stories on here about them being poor to deal with.
Thanks for looking and I'll appreciate any advice on cards that I may have missed!

Thinking of getting a new credit card. What's your 2017 recommendations?

Ok so I have been looking around at credit cards. Here is what I have:
Tangerine: a lot of people still recommend this because it's flexible and has no annual fee, but 2% on 3 categories and 0.5% everywhere else isn't that great. Right now I only use this for the 2% categories and use my PC one for everything else.
My current main credit card is PC World Elite which is 3% on Esso/Loblaws/Shoppers/PC travel and 1% everywhere else. No annual fee. Has some nice benefits like travel insurance, but you can't get groceries or gas anywhere else which has been really starting to bug me.
Some other options I have seen:
Scotiabank Gold American Express Card: 4% earn rate on gas, grocery, dining and entertainment spend, 1% everywhere else. $99/year BUT it looks like the points all go towards travel only. I do travel about once a year or every two years so am considering it.
MBNA Rewards World Elite: $89/year, 2% cashback on everything. I'm thinking probably not worth it as that 89/year mean I need to spend at least $4500 on the card before earning anything.
Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite: $99/year, Earn 4% cash back on gas and groceries (up to $25,000 annually), 2% back on drugstore purchases and recurring bill payments (up to $25,000 annually), and 1% back on all other purchases plus loads of benefits including travel insurance. I'm considering this one, does anyone have it? It seems like the best deal.
